Scripture reveals that Jesus breaks every barrier—religious, social, moral—to offer living water to the person everyone else has written off.
Scripture on Woman At The Well
John 4:7-10
New Testament
"When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, 'Will you give me a drink?' (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?' (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered, 'If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for water, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.'"
John 4:13-14
New Testament
"Jesus answered, 'Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.'"
John 4:17-18
New Testament
"'I have no husband,' she replied. Jesus said to her, 'You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.'"
John 4:25-26
New Testament
"The woman said, 'I know that Messiah (called Christ) is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.' Then Jesus declared, 'I, the one speaking to you—I am he.'"
John 4:39-42
New Testament
"Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, 'He told me all that I ever did.' So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers. They said to the woman, 'We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.'"
The Bottom Line
Jesus sees past your shame and addresses your deepest thirst before you even know how thirsty you are.
Try Today
Identify one thing you've hidden from God or others because of shame. Tell Jesus about it today, specifically, like the woman did at the well.
Prayer
Jesus invites us into honest conversation with Him, just as He did with the woman at the well (John 4:7-10).
Father, like the woman at the well, I come thirsty—thirsty for love that doesn't judge me, for acceptance I haven't earned, for someone who truly sees me. I've hidden parts of my story because I'm ashamed, because I thought I was too far gone. But Jesus, You knew her whole life and didn't turn away. You offered her living water. I need that same water—the kind that satisfies forever. Help me stop hiding and let You see all of me. I'm ready to believe that You came for people like me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
