Scripture reveals that God's people may face literal warfare, but the deepest battles are spiritual—and our first calling is always toward peace.
Scripture on War
Deuteronomy 20:1-4
Old Testament
"When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you. When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army. He shall say: 'Hear, O Israel: Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not panic or be terrified by them. For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.'"
Romans 12:18
New Testament
"If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."
James 4:1-2
New Testament
"What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight."
Proverbs 20:22
Old Testament
"Do not say, 'I'll pay you back for this wrong!' Wait for the Lord, and he will avenge you."
Ephesians 6:12
New Testament
"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
The Bottom Line
God promises His presence in real conflict, but warns that the roots of all fighting grow from unchecked desire within the human heart.
Try Today
Identify one conflict brewing in your life—relational, professional, or internal. Instead of planning your next move, spend ten minutes asking God what desire or fear is really driving it.
Prayer
Jesus taught us to pray for those we struggle with (Matthew 5:44), not to avoid difficult realities but to see them through His eyes.
Father, You are Lord of nations and battles. I confess that I often want to fight for justice, respect, or what I think is right—and sometimes that's appropriate. But show me where my desires are at war within me, where I'm fighting from pride or fear instead of faith. Give me the courage to pursue peace where it depends on me, and the wisdom to know when I must stand firm. Help me remember that You are my defender and my vindicator. In Jesus' name, Amen.
