Scripture reveals the apple as both the symbol of humanity's first choice to doubt God and a picture of beauty, wisdom, and fruitfulness when rightly valued.
Scripture on The Apple
Genesis 3:1-6
Old Testament
"Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, 'Did God really say, "You must not eat from any tree in the garden"?' The woman said to the serpent, 'We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, "You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die."' 'You will not surely die,' the serpent said to the woman. 'For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.' When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it."
Proverbs 25:11
Old Testament
"Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken in right circumstances."
Song of Solomon 2:3
Old Testament
"Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste."
Joel 1:12
Old Testament
"The vine is dried up and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree—all the trees of the field—are dried up. Surely the people's joy is withered away."
The Bottom Line
The apple teaches us that good-looking things aren't always good for us, and the difference between life and death often comes down to whether we trust God's word or believe the serpent's lies.
Try Today
When you face a choice that looks appealing but contradicts what you know God says, pause and ask: 'Am I listening to God's word or the serpent's doubt?' Then choose obedience over appetite.
Prayer
Jesus invites us to come to Him when we're struggling with temptation: 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest' (Matthew 11:28).
Father, help me see that You spoke the truth in Eden and You speak truth now. Forgive me for the times I've chosen what looks good over what You've said is good. When temptation whispers that You're holding out on me, remind me that You're holding out for me—that Your boundaries are mercy, not punishment. Give me the wisdom to recognize the serpent's old lie dressed up in new language. Make me faithful to Your word, even when obedience costs me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
