What Does the Bible Say About Self Control?
Scripture reveals that self-control is a mark of the Holy Spirit's work in us, and it's more powerful than any earthly achievement.
Scripture on Self Control
Identify one impulse you typically give in to (eating, scrolling, speaking harshly). Tomorrow, pause for ten seconds when that impulse hits and pray: 'Spirit, give me power over this.' Then choose once—just once—to wait or refuse.
Prayer
Jesus invited His followers to ask the Father for what we need, knowing He gives His Spirit generously (Luke 11:11-13).
Father, I feel like a city with broken walls—I know what I should do, but I keep caving to my impulses. I'm tired of being ruled by my urges and excuses. I believe You've given me Your Spirit, not just to make me feel guilty, but to actually give me power to choose differently. Show me where I'm weakest. Build the walls back up in me, one day at a time. I don't want to just know about self-control; I want to live it. Help me trust that Your way is actually better than what I'm reaching for. In Jesus' name, Amen.
