Scripture affirms Peter's foundational role but establishes that all church leadership flows from Christ alone and must serve humbly, not dominate.
Scripture on Pope
Matthew 16:17-18
New Testament
"Jesus replied, 'Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.'"
Matthew 23:8-10
New Testament
"But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah."
1 Peter 5:1-4
New Testament
"To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock."
Ephesians 4:11-13
New Testament
"So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."
1 Timothy 3:1-7
New Testament
"Here is a trustworthy saying: whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect."
The Bottom Line
Jesus is the head of the church—leadership exists to shepherd, not to rule, and no human title replaces Christ's authority over believers.
Try Today
Read Matthew 23:8-10 and identify one area where you've given human authority a place that belongs only to Christ—then consciously realign your trust.
Prayer
Jesus taught His disciples to bring their real questions about authority directly to God (Matthew 6:9-13).
Father, help me see church leadership the way Jesus described it—as humble service, not power. I struggle sometimes with knowing who to trust and how much to defer to human authority. Show me how to honor faithful shepherds while keeping my eyes on Christ as my one true Head. Give wisdom to those who lead Your church, that they would shepherd gently and refuse the pride that corrupts. In Jesus' name, Amen.
