Scripture calls Christians to examine the character and integrity of those in leadership, looking for evidence of repentance, self-control, and faithfulness—not celebrity or political alignment alone.
Scripture on Pete Hegseth
1 Timothy 3:2-7
New Testament
"Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's snare."
Proverbs 20:25
Old Testament
"It is a trap to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider one's vows."
2 Timothy 2:2
New Testament
"And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others."
Psalm 26:2
Old Testament
"Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind."
Matthew 7:16-17
New Testament
"By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit."
The Bottom Line
Character matters more than power, and a person's past—especially unrepented sin—tells you something about their trustworthiness that credentials cannot fix.
Try Today
Rather than debating whether someone deserves their position, spend 15 minutes asking God to give you wisdom to see past narrative and celebrity status to actual fruit—in this person and in your own life.
Prayer
Jesus taught us to pray for wisdom about whom to trust—'Ask and it will be given to you' (Matthew 7:7).
Father, I confess how easily I'm swayed by power, credentials, and public presentation. I don't see the heart the way You do. Give me eyes to recognize authentic repentance from performance, and help me care more about character than outcomes. Keep me from building faith on leaders instead of on You. And where there's sin—whether hidden or exposed—help me see it as You do: seriously, but always with the hope of genuine transformation. Make me discerning, not merely opinionated. In Jesus' name, Amen.
