Scripture reveals that mastery is spiritual — you will serve something or someone, and that choice determines the direction of your entire life.
Scripture on Master
Matthew 6:24
New Testament
"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."
John 13:13-14
New Testament
"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet."
Colossians 3:24
New Testament
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving."
Proverbs 22:7
Old Testament
"The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender."
Romans 6:16
New Testament
"Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?"
The Bottom Line
You can't escape having a master; the only question is whether you'll serve Christ or something else.

Prayer
Jesus invites us to come to Him as our true Master, saying 'Take my yoke upon you and learn from me' (Matthew 11:29).
Father, I confess that I've tried to serve things that were never meant to be my master — comfort, success, what others think. I'm tired of divided loyalty. You are Lord. Make me more devoted to following Christ than to anything else. Show me where I'm still holding back, still trying to negotiate the terms. I want to belong entirely to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
