Scripture shows Lot as a righteous man whose spiritual discernment failed when he prioritized material prosperity over God's direction, yet God rescued him because He keeps covenant with His people.
Scripture on Lot
Genesis 13:8-11
Old Testament
"So Abram said to Lot, 'Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herds and mine, for we are close relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right, I'll go to the left.' Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. So Lot chose all the plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east."
Genesis 19:15-16
Old Testament
"With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, 'Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.' When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them."
Genesis 19:24-25
Old Testament
"Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities and everything that grew on the land."
2 Peter 2:7-8
New Testament
"And if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)—"
Luke 17:28-29
New Testament
"'It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.'"
The Bottom Line
Proximity to sin, even when profitable, slowly destroys the soul—but God's mercy reaches those who are His, even when they've wandered.

Prayer
Jesus taught us to pray directly to the Father with our struggles, as He did in Matthew 26:39.
Father, Lot's story shows me how easy it is to drift toward what looks good and prosperous while losing spiritual sight. I confess the ways I rationalize choices that pull me from Your direction—comfort, status, security that doesn't come from You. Keep my heart alert. Give me the courage to leave behind what's spiritually toxic, even when it feels safe or profitable. And when I've wandered, meet me with the same mercy You showed Lot. In Jesus' name, Amen.
