Scripture reveals that Jesus' power over death isn't just about resuscitation—it's proof of His identity as the resurrection and life itself, demanding faith or resistance.
Scripture on Lazarus
John 11:1-4
New Testament
"Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) So the sisters sent word to Jesus, 'Lord, the one you love is sick.' When he heard this, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it.'"
John 11:21-27
New Testament
"Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my sister would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you all that you ask.' Jesus said to her, 'Your brother will rise again.' Martha answered, 'I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.' Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?' 'Yes, Lord,' she told him, 'I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who has come into the world.'"
John 11:38-44
New Testament
"Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 'Take away the stone,' he said. But, Lord,' said Martha, the sister of the dead man, 'by this time there is a bad smell, for he has been there four days.' Then Jesus said, 'Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?' So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, 'Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.' When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!' The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, 'Take off the grave clothes and let him go.'"
John 11:45-46
New Testament
"Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done."
Romans 6:9
New Testament
"For we know that Christ, being raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over him."
The Bottom Line
Lazarus rising from the dead wasn't a miracle to feel good about—it was Jesus showing that He breaks death's grip and calls people to believe or reject Him.

Prayer
Jesus invites us to believe in His power over what terrifies us most—He says, 'I am the resurrection and the life' (John 11:25-26).
Father, the story of Lazarus shows me that You are not distant from our pain. You waited. You let death happen. And then You called him out of the grave. I confess that I often believe You care more about my comfort than Your glory. Show me what it means to trust You when You seem slow, when You seem to let things fall apart. Give me Martha's raw honesty and her eventual faith. Help me see that every resurrection story in Scripture points to Jesus breaking death's power. Strengthen my faith not in a life without suffering, but in a God who has conquered suffering's final weapon. In Jesus' name, Amen.
