Scripture warns us that comparing our calling to another person's calling creates division and pulls our eyes off Jesus.
Scripture on John 212023
John 21:20-23
New Testament
"Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, 'Lord, who is going to betray you?' When Peter saw him, he asked, 'Lord, what about him?' Jesus answered, 'If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.' Because of this statement, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, 'If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?'"
1 Corinthians 12:25
New Testament
"So that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other."
Romans 14:10-12
New Testament
"You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat. It is written: 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.' So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God."
Proverbs 26:12
Old Testament
"Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them."
Matthew 6:33
New Testament
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
The Bottom Line
God's assignment for your life isn't determined by what He does with someone else—it's determined by His will for you alone.
Try Today
When you catch yourself wondering why God is doing something in someone else's life that He hasn't done in yours, stop. Say His name. Refocus on what He's actually called you to do today.
Prayer
Jesus invites us to lay down our comparisons and jealousies at the cross—Matthew 11:28 promises rest for the weary.
Father, I confess that I look sideways at others' paths and wonder why mine is different. I measure my faithfulness against theirs instead of against Your word. Forgive me for the division this creates in my heart and in the body of Christ. Help me trust that Your plan for me is complete, not incomplete. Give me eyes only for the work You've put in front of me. I surrender my questions about others to You and ask for the grace to follow hard after Jesus alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
