What Does the Bible Say About Gods?

Scripture reveals that false gods—whether carved from wood, cast from metal, or built from human desire—are powerless and worthless, while the one true God alone deserves worship.

Scripture on Gods

Exodus 20:3 Old Testament
"You shall have no other gods before me."
1 Corinthians 8:4-6 New Testament
"So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that 'An idol is nothing at all in the world' and that 'There is no God but one.' For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many 'gods' and many 'lords'), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live."
Psalm 115:4-8 Old Testament
"But their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell. They have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but cannot walk; nor can they utter a sound with their throats. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them."
Acts 17:29-30 New Testament
"Therefore since we are God's offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent."
Isaiah 44:9-10 Old Testament
"All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind; they are ignorant, to their own shame. Who shapes a god and casts an idol, which profits nothing?"
The Bottom Line
Every false god we bow to is a lie that promises power but delivers emptiness; only the living God is worthy of allegiance.

Identify one 'god' you're tempted to trust more than the Lord—money, status, approval, comfort—and honestly name it to Him in prayer.

Prayer

Jesus taught us to pray, 'Your kingdom come, your will be done' (Matthew 6:10)—inviting us to dethrone every false lord.

Father, forgive me for the times I've chased after false gods—things that promise satisfaction but leave me empty. I've trusted in money for security, in people's approval for worth, in my own strength for deliverance. These idols are nothing, just as Your Word says. Right now, I turn from them. I confess that You alone are God—powerful, faithful, worthy of my whole heart. Help me see through the lies these false gods tell and strengthen me to worship You alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
