What Does the Bible Say About Demons?

Scripture reveals that demons are real spiritual beings under Satan's leadership, actively hostile to God and His people, yet utterly subject to Christ's authority.

Scripture on Demons

Mark 1:23-24 New Testament
"Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!'"
Ephesians 6:12 New Testament
"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
1 Peter 5:8 New Testament
"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."
James 4:7 New Testament
"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Revelation 12:9 New Testament
"The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him."
The Bottom Line
Demons are real—but Jesus has already won, and His authority over them is absolute and available to those who belong to Him.
Try Today

When you sense spiritual oppression or darkness today, speak aloud: 'Jesus, I belong to you. I submit to your authority and reject any claim the enemy tries to make on me.' Say it as an act of allegiance, not as a formula.

Prayer

Jesus invites us to come to Him with our fears and struggles, as He told His disciples in John 14:27.

Father, thank you that the spiritual battle is real but that Jesus has already defeated darkness. I confess that I sometimes forget the reality of the enemy's tactics—fear, deception, discouragement. Help me stay alert without becoming paranoid, and help me remember that my strength comes from submission to You, not from my own resistance. When I feel the weight of darkness around me or within me, remind me that Jesus' name has power over it. Give me the courage to submit fully to Jesus and the wisdom to recognize the enemy's lies. In Jesus' name, Amen.
