What Does the Bible Say About Cremation?

Scripture reveals that our physical bodies return to the dust from which they came, but God will resurrect and reunite our bodies with our souls at the final judgment.

Scripture on Cremation

Genesis 3:19 Old Testament
"By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return."
Ecclesiastes 3:20 Old Testament
"All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return."
1 Corinthians 15:42-44 New Testament
"So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body."
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 New Testament
"For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever."
Revelation 20:13 New Testament
"The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done."
The Bottom Line
Though we return to dust, our souls live on, and God will one day raise our bodies imperishable for eternal life.

Prayer

As Jesus said, 'Ask and it will be given to you' (Matthew 7:7).

Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that our bodies are but dust, yet you have promised to redeem and resurrect them. Help us to hold loosely to this earthly life, and to fix our eyes on the eternal life to come. Give us hope in your power to raise the dead and unite our souls with new, imperishable bodies. In Jesus' name, Amen.
