Scripture reveals that light—whether God's Word, Christ's presence, or our witness—pierces darkness and guides those who are lost.
Scripture on Candlelight
Matthew 5:14-16
New Testament
"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
Psalm 119:105
Old Testament
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
Isaiah 60:1
Old Testament
"Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you."
John 8:12
New Testament
"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'"
2 Corinthians 4:6
New Testament
"For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ."
The Bottom Line
You are not meant to hide the light you've been given; you're meant to let it burn so others can find their way to God.
Try Today
Tonight, light a candle and sit with it for two minutes. As you watch it burn, ask yourself: What area of my life am I hiding instead of letting shine? Then tell one person today about something God has done in your life.
Prayer
Jesus invites us to follow Him into the light—and to be light ourselves (John 8:12).
Father, I'm often afraid to let my faith show. I want to fit in, blend in, stay safe. But You're calling me to shine. Help me see that my hesitation to be open about You isn't humility—it's disobedience. Make me brave enough to let my light burn brightly, even when it makes people uncomfortable. And use whatever good I do to point them back to You, not to me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
